GROWTH. Its great early industry was boat building,and over five hundred steamboats and otherriver craft have been launched from her boat-yards. A paper mill, cotton factory, foundry,and flouring mills, and glass and steel workswere built and operated during the first halfof the nineteenth century, but when the oldNational Road was ruined by the railroadsBridgeport suffered from the blow as well asBrownsville. With the building of the Mo-nongahela division of the Pennsylvania rail-road to West Brownsville and through toUniontown, Bridgeport found herself oncemore possessed of opportunities and facili-ties for growth and development. Free lock-age on the river has also been promotive ofher commercial interests. A flouring mill anda large foundry and machine shop are nowrunning, and facilities exist for successfulboat AND HISTORICAL REFERENCE BOOK OF PAYETTE COUNTY. 479 Bridgeport has one licensed hotel, the Barhouse, quite a nvunber of stores, and an iceplant and storage house. The borough hasthree phj-sicians and about fifteen merchantsand two druggists. The postofifice is namedCadwallader, after the founder of the town,and dates back but a few years. EdwardHerd was the first and S. G. Krepps is thepresent postmaster. The churches (1899) are the CumberlandPresbyterian, Second M. E., and A. M. A very fine school building was erect-ed in 1895 at a cost of $18,000 to accommo-date the borough, and ten of its rooms areoccupied. B
