The Sisters of St. Paul de Chartreswere tstablished at Manila in 1904. Besides theirhospital Avork and a large school of nati\e nurses inthe city, the> have charge of se\eral academies in theprovinces. The Benedictine Sisters came to the isl-ands from Germany in 1906. They established thecollege of St. Scholastica, and have organized in theirchapel the devotion of the Perpetual .\doration. Charitable Institutions.—The Hospital of SanJuan de Dios, situated in the Walled of Manila,was founded in 1596 by the Confraternity of Santa. Leoaspi-Urdaneta JIonument, -Manila Legaspi was the founder of the city, and Urdaneta the missionary who accompanied him Misericordia. In 1656 it passed into the hands of theOrder of St. John of God, and in 1886 it was put underthe care of the Sisters of Charity, who still conduct theinstitution. The hospital was twice destroyed byearthquakes, and was severely damaged by the stormof 1882. The generosity of the pious people, espe-cially of the governor-general and of the archbishops,restored it; the building was enlarged and now occu-pies a large city square. The patients, the majorityof whom are Filipinos, number between four hundredand five hundred, a fourth of whom are charity pa-tients, supported by the hospital.
