Canongate Tolbooth and The People's Story Museum in Canongate Edinburgh

The Canongate Tolbooth dates from 1591 and was once used as a prison as well as containing municipal chambers. The People's Story Museum is now housed in the building and it is a museum with a difference. It uses oral history, reminiscence, and written sources to tell the story of the lives, work and leisure of the ordinary people of Edinburgh, from the late 18th century to the present day. To the left can be found the Tolbooth Tavern.
