Nicolas Flamel (), French alchemist. Flamel was a scrivener and seller of manuscripts. His alchemical reputation was posthumous, based on claims that he achieved alchemy's two central goals: the Philosopher's Stone (turning base metals to gold) and the Elixir of Life (immortality). Flamel's tombstone is held at the Musee de Cluny in Paris. His subsequent legendary status led to mentions or depictions in later accounts and books, including the works of Isaac Newton (17th century), Victor Hugo (19th century) and J. K. Rowling (20th century). This etching is after a drawing by the Dutch artist Rembrandt (1606-1669).
