Adult female: Simi- lar but duller, with somewhat lesser ruffs and shorter tail; iris, bill and feet as in male. Juvenal plumage: Sexes practically indistinguishable; similar to that of adult female but browner, with barring usually paler, not so distinct; chin and often upper throat white or whitish; outer webs of flight- feathers wider, more mottled, ruffs wanting. Downy young: Chestnut-buff above, varie- gated with paler buff, paler on top of head; a black hne behind eye, sometimes in- terrupted ; below pale buff or pale yellow, brightest on chin, with faint brownish band on lower neck. Measurements. — Length to in.; spread to ; folded wing to ; tail to ; bill from nostril .50 to .53; tarsus to Weight 16^ to 27 oz. (B. H. Warren). Male said to weigh rarely 29 oz. Female smaller than male.
