Sergeant J. Hoehlein took this photograph on September 17, 1918, at Bolling Field in Anacostia, The image captured the position of an airplane in the Potomac River right after it had crashed. Lieutenant A. Embelt was the pilot, and Lieutenant Enos B. Smith was the observer. It should be noted that this photograph was not for public release and was intended for official use only.
