Dr. Samuel MacKenzie Elliott House, West New Brighton, Staten Island, New York
The house was built Dr. Samuel MacKensie Elliott in the West New Brighton section of Staten Island around 1850. By the time ophthalmologist and abolitionist Samuel MacKenzie Elliott (1811–75) received a degree from the New York Medical College in 1851, he was already recognized as a leading eye specialist. At first he operated a Manhattan clinic on Williams Street, describing himself as an “oculist”, but later relocated to Staten Island, building 22 Gothic revival cottages for the use of his patients in what became known as Elliottville. His renown attracted such patients as Francis Parkman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Charlotte Cushman and John James Audubon. His houses were also said to have been used as part of the Underground Railroad.
