In 1822 was sentto England with important despatches, and re-ceived the Brevet rank of Major. In 1842 com-manded the successful expedition sent to Natal torelieve a Detachment besieged by insurgent as Deputy Quarter Master General theKaffir campaign of 1846 (CB.). During the Kaffirwar of 1851-53 served as Chief of the Staff withthe Army in the Field, including the operationsin the Basuta country and the battle of Berea
