May. DOGWOOD. Cornus Florida. An American species of fine form, growing from 16 to 25 feet high; the flowers are produced in the spring before the leaves appear, are from three to three and a half inches in diameter, white and very showy, resembling the Clematis flower somewhat; the foliage in autumn is of a deep rcc7, color, rendering the tree one of the most beautiful objects at that season. Red Flowering (C. F. Ruba). Tree in habit of growth not unlike the grand white flowering variety; flowers are a rich rosy red and several inches across, while the foliage assumes a crimson color at au earlier stage; the finest of our native flowering trees. ViM [Ulmas]. American White (^wi'^-zcnMa). The no- ble drooping, spreading tree of our own woods; one of the grandest of park or street trees. C'anipcstris (English). More upright and compact habit than American; also the leaves are smaller and more numerous. Purple. A beautiful variety, leaves of rich purple color when young. Scotch or Wj'Ch (Montana). A fine spreading tree of rapid growth; foliage large. Subrosa (Cork-barked). Bark becomes covered with a fine dense cork with deep fissures. HORSE CHESTNUT (yEsculus). Alba Plena (Double White).
