Illustration from Pictorial records of remarkable events published circa 1890. Outsiders in a then largely Christian world the persecution of England's Jews could be brutal, and deadly massacres are recorded at London and York during the crusades. Kings regularly taxed Jewish fortunes to support their wars, and if found failing whipped up bad feeling by accusing them of unreasonable usury, coin clipping and counterfeiting. They were expelled from Britain in the 1290 Edict of Expulsion by Edward I. They were not to return until after the English Civil war.
