Hair follicle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a transverse freeze-fractured section through a hair shaft (centre orange) and the follicle (circular layers) it is anchored in. The hair shaft is covered with a cuticle that contains a hard form of keratin (the protein that is found in hair). The follicle layers are an internal root sheath an external root sheath and the outermost connective tissue sheath (not seen). Magnification: x150 at 10cm size.
