Thomas was in charge of theschool, and continued it until he left Charlotte in 1883, inwhich year the building was sold to^ the city graded W. A. Barrier founded the Macon school in 1870, andconducted it until he died in November, 1890. Capt. J. purchased the building and Ei. L. Reid was principalfrom 189O to 1891. Capt. Baird then assumed control ofthe school and has since conducted it, and in 1894, the namewas changed to Charlotte Military Institute. The present1)uilding was occupied in \C)0\. The school lias high sclmol. EDUCATION I^ROM 1860 TO I903. I71 and primary departments, and is highly considered forefficient training*. Since its beginning in 1870, it has giveninstruction to thirty-five hundred boys. S;t. Marys Seminary in Charlotte was established in 1888,and is conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, who also conductthe Academy of the Sacred Heart near Belmont. me:dicai, :.North Carolina Medical College was established by P. Munroe at Davidson in 1893, and the property is worth$10,000. It had four instructors and eleven students the firstyear, and in the session of 1902-1903, there were seventeeninstructors and sixty-seven students.
