(W. H. L.) BRZOZOWSKI, THADDEUS (d. 1820), nineteenth general ofthe Jesuits, was appointed in succession to Gabriel Gruber onthe and of September 1805. In 1801 Pius VII. had given theJesuits liberty to reconstitute themselves in north Russia (seeJesuits: History), and ini8i2Brzozowski secured the recognitionof the Jesuit college of Polotsk as a university, though he couldnot obtain permission to go to Spain to agitate for the recognition. In 1814 Pius VII., in accordance withthe bull SoUicitudo omnium ecclesiarum, gave to Brzozowskiamong others full authority to receive those who desired to enterthe society. The Russian government, however, soon began tobe alarmed at the growth of the Jesuits, and on the 20th ofDecember 1815 published an edict expelling them from StPetersburg. Brzozowski, having vainly requested to be allowedto retire to Rome, died on the sth of February 1820. He isinteresting mainly from the fact that he was general of theSociety at the time of its restoration throughout Europe.
