In addition to theatrical performance, this theatre was used for social and religious activities. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 4,000 people. Metropolis was founded during the Early Bronze Age, about 5,000 years ago. During the Hellenistic period, the city was fortified with impressive walls, while during the Roman period trade was among the main sources of income in the city that was located on the road between Ephesus and Smyrna.
