But. encouraged by their general, the regulars andmounted riflemen gallantly maintained their ground, while MajorDaviess, with his cavalry, charged their whole line. The lattermovement was unsuccessful; and, at daylight, the Americans beheldthemselves nearly surrounded by the enemy, who were pouring in amost deadly fire.
