Nowit has more than half a million people, and is the sixthAmerican city. In foreign trade, however, it standsthird, and its docks are busy places. The Hamburg-American, the North-German Lloyd, and the Red Starlines all send regular steamers between Baltimore andEurope, and hundreds of others sail to ports on our own. Fig. 42. Balti-more builds ships as well as sails them, to carry thecorn, flour, and meat of the prairies and the great plainsto foreign lands, and to bring back their products inexchange. Where there are railways and ships thereare always merchants and factories. Out of the gainsof trade a Baltimore merchant built one of the mostfamous of our schools, the Johns Hopkins University. There has been no more important factor in thedevelopment of the United States than is found in the THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO RAILROAD 109 great railway systems, which, by Unking all sectionstogether, give unity and strength to the whole fabric ofour government.
