Basal leaves runcinate-pinnatifid, those of the stem linear or linear-lanceolate,acute, dentate or entire, sessile, i-ii long. i-i¥wide; heads terminal and lateral on the branches,short-peduncled or sessile, 4-6 broad; involucreglabrous or nearly so, about 4 high, its inner bractsnarrowly linear; achenes muricate and spiny nearthe summit, slightly shorter than the filiform beak. In dry fields and waste places, Delaware to Marylandand Virginia. Xaturalized from Europe. Skeleton-weed. Devils-grass.
