He then took charge of his own machine and,with another brother, became the most expert machineminer of his day and district. This is attested to by thefact that at eighteen years of age he issued a challengeoffering $500 to any miner in the district winning in match of skill and strength. This challengewas never taken up. This fact is the more remarkablebecause at the age of sixteen jears he met with avery serious accident in the mine, when he was caughtbetween a car and the wall of the mine. As a result ofthis accident he suffered a compound fracture of oneleg, several contusions on the head, lacerations all over.
