Reconstruction of a WW11 USAAF airman He is wearing the Armor, Flyer’s, Vest M1 with the Armor, Flyer’s, Apron M3. Also shown is the Helmet, M4A2. The protective body coverage of the M1 vest and M3 apron combination is clearly shown here. However, the M3 apron offered little lateral protection and the crewman’s rear was unprotected below the kidney area, equally axillary protection was also limited. Aircrew were susceptible to injury from blasts in a full 360 degree arc, including from below their crew position. It was not unknown for airmen to acquire additional armour upon which they stood or sat.
