The frequent appearance of this tree of thesacred genealogy of Jesus Christ is noticeable in em-broideries, stained glass windows, wall paintings, etc., ofthe period, and is a religious phase of that fashion forgenealogical trees to which the adoption of family ccatsof arms gave rise. The embroidery of the Spitzerorphrey is in silk upon satin. The satin is left for theparts which show as skin in the figures ; features, eyes,hair, and beards on it being embroidered with blacksilk in so closely pulled stitches as to be mistakenfor pen and ink lines.
