Blue sky altocmulus clouds view, east to snow-covered moorland hillsides, frozen waters Dowry Reservoir, Denshaw, Oldham, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus ten degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfalls. The first spell lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. The view looks over the frozen waters of Dowry Reservoir, near Denshaw, on the western edge of the South Pennines. Some thawing is evident. The view looks from the Huddersfield Road (A 640) crossing the dam, looking east to snow-covered moorland. Oldham Corporation Waterworks constructed the reservoir between 1876 and 1883. The bridge in the background originally carried the access road to the Dowry Castle Estate. The remains of the farm complex buildings are seen on the hillside left background. The buildings were dismantled in 1897. The A640 Huddersfield Road crosses the hills right background.
