And it is, of course, impossi-ble to eliminate all play and flexibility from a valve oper-ating mechanism consisting of several very light parts. In a design of engine due to R. Abell, and which is il-lustrated herewith in cross section and longitudinal ele-vation partly in section, only a single poppet valve is usedper cylinder. This valve serves for both the inlet andexhaust. The function of the valve is determined by arotary distributor which places the poppet valve pocket incommunication alternately with inlet and exhaust ports. The engine is a six cylinder block cast type of 3Vi x 5 in. stroke. Both the poppet valve and the dis-tributor are moured in the cylinder head, which is de-tachable and is bo id to the cylinder block with the usualcopper-asbestos gasket between. The combustion cham-. bers, which are located in the cylinder head, are hemi-spherical in shape and are completely machined. Twospark plug bosses are provided, on opposite sides of thecylinder head. The overhead camshaft is located in thecenter plane of the cylinders and is operated from thecrankshaft through a vertical shaft at the forward endof the engine which is provided with bevel gears both attop and bottom. This vertical shaft is a high speed shaft, being geared up from the crankshaft in the ratio of 3 to 4,and can therefore be quite light. It is enclosed in a Vshaped extension at the for-ward end of the cylindercasting and is provided witha splined sliding joint tomake allowance for the heatexpansion of the cylinderblock. The valve rocker leversare yoke shaped and are pro-vided with rollers on oppo-site sides of the cams. Thecams are of unusual shapeand they completely fill upthe space between the rollersthroughout the cycle. Thereis, therefore, no lost motionin the whole me
