Irenee du Pont. Portrait of Eleuthere Irenee du Pont (1771-1834), French-American chemist. Du Pont was Lavoisier's assistant but turned to publishing after the latter's execution during the French Revolution. In 1802 du Pont emigrated to America and soon discovered the poor quality of the locally-made gunpowder. He founded a manufacturing plant at Brandywine Creek, Delaware, and the business soon expanded despite an explosion which killed 40 men in 1818. The du Pont family have dominated the firm, and a large part of the American chemical industry, ever since.
