False-colour scintigram (gamma camera scan) of an anterior view of a normal human liver. The scintigram is a record of the distribution of radiation in the liver recorded by a gamma camera, following the injection of a radioactive tracer (technetium-99m), which becomes concentrated in the organ. Gamma scintigraphy is used to diagnose various disorders of different organs. A liver scan, for example, might be used in screening for secondary cancer deposits following the treatment of a primary tumour. The image was produced in the Regional Medical Physics Department of the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
