The town of Balmaseda is on a very hilly area in southwest province of Vizcaya. It is part of the region of the Encartaciones. Its origin is in 1199, the year in which Don Lopez Sanchez founded the town of Mena. It was an important transit and trade in goods, so it soon became a market town. The Church of St. John, the fifteenth century, is gothic - renaissance. It was founded by Juan Lopez of La Puente. It has a single nave with apse and a tower with Churrigueresque auction, the eighteenth century. The porch is a 1887 building by architect Daniel Escondrillas. The medieval bridge Balmaseda is indeed the true emblem. It is known as Old Bridge or Point of Muza, saving Cadagua River, and to serve as unpaid for goods from the major ports of Cantabria sailors bound for the heart of the peninsula.
