Kabuki face mapping. Camera image of a man's face which is used to animate the face of a computer- generated Japanese theatre (kabuki) performer. The image was taken by a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera which is mounted on a helmet worn by the person. A computer divides each of the red squares (\windows\") into 64 small areas (\"pixels\"). The computer monitors the pattern of light and dark areas across the pixels to determine the person's facial expression. It uses this information to animate a computer-generated figure. Photographed at the Advanced Telecommunications and Research Institute International (ATR) in Japan."
