Cabbage white caterpillar. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the caterpillar (larva) of a large (or cabbage) white butterfly (Pieris brassicae). Several dark ocelli (simple eyes) can be seen on the caterpillar's head (upper left). Some of its legs are seen at lower centre. This caterpillar is covered in hairs which make it unpalatable to predators. These caterpillars do huge amounts of damage to the cabbage crops in Europe, as they feed almost exclusively on these plants from birth until they pupate. Magnification: x19 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x48 at 5x7ins size.
