The settlement of the tcwii proceeded but slowly for many years after its incorporation, thecensus ofj 1767 giving it a population of 158, and that of 1773 showing a gain of but sixty-two, thepopulation then being 220. During the Revolution, Hinsdale furnished her full proportion of menand supplies, in 1783 had but 303 inhabitants and but 330 in 1786. During the next four years avery decided gain was made, and the census of 1790 gives the town a population of 522, which wasincreased to 634 in 1800, to 740 in 1810, to 890 in 1820, to 937 in 1830, and to 1141 in 1840. By thistime the valuable water powers in the township had begun to be improved and utilized in earnest, and. Stebbins Block, Hinsdale. on this account and also by reason of the building of the Ashuelot Railroad, the gain made duringthe next decade was extremely large, the population in 1850 amounting to 1903. The loss during thenext ten years was almost equally great, the population having diminished to 1312 in 1860, while apopulation of 1342 in 1870 shows that the town barely held its own during that decade; but the tideturned and set strongly in the other direction, and in 1880 Hinsdale Iiad a population of 1868, whichwas increased in 1890 to 2253, by far the largest in her history up to that time, and as the gain is stillin progress, it is evident that the town has entered upon a new era of prosperity, while the gain hasbeen and is so steady as well as so pronounced that it is plainly not the result of any temporary boom but is
