James \Miranda Stuart\" Barry (1795-1865), British physician and surgeon. Miranda Stuart enrolled at Edinburgh University in 1809, using the name James Barry. She disguised herself as a man in order to study medicine and become a doctor. She qualified in 1812 and maintained her masquerade throughout a distinguished career as an army doctor serving all over the world. She reached the rank of Inspector- General of Army Hospitals. She conducted the first successful caesarean section (1826). She was accompanied everywhere by her close confidant, her manservant from Jamaica, and her dog Psyche. Barry was only found to be female after her death."
