The next few inspirations areusually cut short or prevented by the strong ether vapour, and con-siderable cyanosis is occasioned for a few moments. Respirationsoon becomes more regular, however, and at this juncture fresh airmay be allowed in sufficient quantity to re-establish the anaesthetising children, feeble subjects, and old persons, some-what more air should be allowed during the transition from gas to ether than is generally advisable. This particular method is welladapted for anaesthetising children, adolescents, and very nervouswomen. Nitrous oxide and ether may also be given together byemploying the stopcock and gas-bag of Fig. 47 fitted to a Cloversinhaler (Fig. 48). The bag, filled with gas, is attached to thecharged ether chamber, and the face-piece is applied. Air is at firstbreathed; nitrous oxide is then turned on, and half the gasbreathed out through valves; the remaining half is then breathed to. CHLOROFORM. 277 and fro by turning the valves off; and ether is admitted in increasingquantities by rotating the ether chamber. When clonic movementsdeep stertor, or much cyanosis arise, one breath of air should begiven. The administration is subsequently conducted as alreadydescribed (page 274: paragraph 4). This particular method givesbetter results than the preceding in dental practice and in anaes-thetising powerfully-built or alcoholic men for ordinary surgicaloperations. 8. By chloroform. Open method.—This is to be pre-ferred to other methods for ordinary cases.
