Sewer Gas Lamp. This lamp, known as Iron Lilly, is said to be London's only remaining sewer lamp. The Webb Patent Sewer Lamp was invented in the late 19th century primarily as a means to burn off smells from the sewers running underneath the city. The methane was collected by a small dome in the roof of the sewer, and the lamp was (and still is) left burning 24 hours a day. Photographed on Carting Lane, London, UK.
