In 480 Saint Brigid arrived in Kildare with her nuns. Following her death in 523 , a shrine was erected and for many centuries Kildare maintained a unique experiment in which the Abbess ruled over a double community of nuns and monks. Between 835 and 1500, it was frequently damaged and was derelict by 1649. The Cathedral again fell into disrepair following the 16th century English Reformation and 17th century Irish Confederate Wars. A complete restoration of the Cathedral Church was undertaken in the 19th century by George Edmund Street. County Kildare, Ireland.
In the year 480 Saint Brigid arrived in Kildare with her nuns. Following her death in 523 , a shrine was erected in her honour and for many centuries Kildare maintained a unique Irish experiment in which the Abbess ruled over a double community of women and men, and the Bishop was subordinate in jurisdiction to the abbess. Between the years 835 and 1500, it has been damaged many times and was derelict by 1649. In 1686 it was partially rebuilt. The Cathedral again fell into disrepair following the 16th century English Reformation, and was ruined during the 17th century Irish Confederate Wars. A complete restoration of the Cathedral Church was undertaken during the 19th century by George Edmund Street. County Kildare, Ireland.
