Although patient I have not yet succeeded inentering into any intellectual understanding withthese people. Only now does it begin to dawnupon my teachers that I am anxious to learn theirlanguage, and then a slow progress begins. Manytimes I have to repeat some word given to rep-resent an object to get the true value, as oftendifferent persons give different names, becausethey do not really understand my question. Let me quote two examples: when I point at ahammock to find the corresponding word in theirlanguage, I am told mundeyiih. This I put downas hammock, but when pointing at a loin-cloththe same word is given. Here is something radi-cally wrong and only long investigation informsme that mundeyiih means cotton. Both hammockand loin-cloth are made of cotton. When pointingat the book the word kari apoh is given. This Ierroneously put down as book or writing. Later Iverify that it means white man is making(something).. Figure A. Indian attempts at drawingThe scrolls represent his idea of the surrounding A the authors portrait.—(Page 236)
