Human lymphoblast (Molt-4 cell line) from human bone marrow, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Human lymphoblasts are immature white blood cells (leukocytes) located in the bone marrow that generally form mature lymphocytes. In acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) human lymphoblasts divide uncontrollably (malignant cancer) and are found in high numbers in the peripheral blood. This proliferation impairs the production of red blood cells, platelets and other white blood cells. Organs, such as the brain, liver, testes and brain, may cease proper functioning as they become infiltrated with the leukemic cells. This human lymphoblast cell line (Molt-4 cell line) was isolated from a human leukaemia patient. Magnification: x2,135 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
