Premature baby in an incubator. The baby is attached to a ventilator (large plastic tubes running from bottom left to centre) to help with its breathing. Other tubes deliver food, fluids and drugs. Babies born before 37 weeks of development require constant monitoring in a contained environment. Their immune system and internal organs are underdeveloped and they have difficulty maintaining a constant body temperature.
