United States. Utah. Grand County near Moab. US Highway 279 along the Colorado river: Indian petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are commonly found on the black or brown surface of rock cliffs, called "desert varnish". It is composed of particles of clay together with iron and manganese oxides. Archaeologists believe that most of these petroglyphs were created during the Archaic Period (6000-1000 ) and the Fremont Period (450-1300 ). In the Archaic Period figures are predominantly antropomorphous and zoomorphous, with lines, concentric circles and abstract symbols. In the Fremont Period, Indian artists depict animals, hunting scenes, weapons and abstract objects.
