Main offices of the territorial authority (local government) of Corsica in Ajaccio (Corse-du-Sud) on the island of Corsica, France
The Grand Hotel of Ajaccio and Continental. Figurehead of the foreigners' quarter, the Grand Hotel of Ajaccio was built between 1894 and 1896 by the architect Barthélemy Maglioli on the artery opened under the Second Empire to connect the Place du Diamant to the Casone. It is to Count François-Xavier Forcioli-Conti that we owe its construction. The management of the establishment was entrusted to a Swiss hotelier, Theophile Hofer. In the center of a 12,000 m2 park, the Grand Hotel had then a hundred luxurious rooms and lounges, a sumptuous dining room and a vestibule decorated with a colonnade as an optical illusion. At the time it was in the same league with the Winter Palace of Menton, the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, the Hyde Park Hotel in London, the Ritz Hotel in Paris, the Grand Hotel in Rome and the Frankfurterhof in Frankfurt. It currrently houses the territorial collectivity (French: collectivité territoriale, previously collectivité locale), or territorial authority, a chartered subdivision of France with recognized governing authority. It is the generic name for any subdivision (subnational entity) with an elective form of local government and local regulatory authority. The nature of a French territorial collectivity is set forth in Article 72 of the Constitution of France (1958), which provides for local autonomy within limits prescried by law.
