Harvey demonstrating heart anatomy to Charles I, 17th century. Illustration of English anatomist William Harvey (1578-1657) demonstrating the palpitations of the foetal heart of a deer in front of the English King Charles I (1600-1649). Harvey is famous for his discovery that the blood and heart form part of a complete systemic circulatory system, something that had not been fully realised before. He published his findings in 1628 in 'De Motu Cordis' (On the Motion of the Heart and Blood). The book included a dedication to King Charles I. This is an engraving of an 1848 painting by Robert Hannah. The original painting is held at the Royal College of Physicians, London.
