Engraving of Major General Ormsby MacKnight (or McKnight) Mitchel (August 28, 1810 – October 30, 1862), an American astronomer and major general in the American Civil War. Mitchell was also an attorney, surveyor, professor, and publisher, known in the Union Army as "Old Stars". Original engraving by John Buttre, circa 1866.
