Mandibular canal and salivary gland stones. Coloured X-ray of part of the mouth and lower jaw of a 36-year-old man with stones (mineral deposits, calculi) in the submandibular gland on his right side, with the nearby mandibular canal marked by arrows. The stones are the irregular white areas at lower left, behind the bottom two arrows. The formation of a calculus in a salivary gland is known as sialolithiasis. Surgery or shockwave therapy can be used to treat the condition. The mandibular canal is the space that encloses the inferior alveolar nerve, artery and vein. It is important to avoid damage to these nerves and blood vessels when carrying out dental surgery.
