The small foliage is densely arranged around the wiry stems, and both in full bloom or in mid-winter they make a very pretty picture. Give some protection the first winter to ac- climate them. Semi-shady location. Vaffans (Cornish Heath). Compact evergreen shrub with dark green small foliage and pale purplish red flowers in August and September; 12 Inches. A good rock plant for a semi-shaded position. Vnlgrarls (Calluna vulgaris). (Scotch Heather.) A dense-growing shrub with erect branches covered with short, closely lapped leaves.
