Alexander Fleming, Scottish bacteriologist, c1930s. Fleming (1881-1955) discovered the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, in 1928. He shared the Nobel prize for physiology and medicine with Howard Florey (1898-1968) and Ernst Chain (1906-1979) in 1945.
