AIDS viruses on T-cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a white blood cell (T- lymphocyte or T-cell) infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The HIV virus is the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). An infected T-cell typically has a lumpy and irregular rounded surface (blue). Small spherical virus particles visible on the surface are in the process of budding away from the cell membrane. Destruction of T-cells due to HIV infection is the main reason for the collapse of the immune system in AIDS. Magnification unknown.
