He was now obliged tolook for a lodging sufficiently spaciousto serve as a studio, among the out-lying districts where the rents werewithin his means. His art was morethan ever necessary to him, both asa diversion and a means of liveli-hood. But he felt strangely out ofhis element in the various temporarydwelling-places with which he wasforced to content himself, after thehome which he had arranged to suit his own tastes and had not only lost his engravings, his precious stuffs, his jewels, andall the accessories he had hitherto considered essential to his art; butnow, when advancing age was beginning to tell upon his sight, he wasforced to accept such conditions of illumination as his improvisedstudios afforded. Neither had he come to the end of his businessanxieties. His own affairs were indeed past mending. But
