View WNW of a replica Celtic cross on the site of the altar within the outline of Capel Gwladys on Gelligaer Common, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, UK. The Medieval chapel, excavated in 1906, stood on the site of a C6th one dedicated to/founded by St Gwladys, mother of St Cattwg (Cadoc, Cadog). A C9th/10th memorial slab inscribed with a Celtic cross was discovered during the 1906 excavations & moved to Gelligaer church which is dedicated to St Cattwg. Gwladys was one of the many saintly children of King St Brychan, she married the formerly pagan chieftain Gwynllyw (Gwynlliw) who became St Woolos of Newport. The date on the replica cross is 430 AD, but Gwladys is generally considered to have lived in the 6thAD.
