The throw was measured from the front line of the balbisto the place where the diskos or spear fell, and it is obviousthat the competitor might not overstep this line under penaltyof disqualification.^ In the gymnasia this line might bemarked out temporarily by means of spears stuck in theground on either side, or, as Dr. Pernice has suggested, by aline traced on the sand, though I cannot agree with hisinterpretation of certain vases on which he fancies the tracingof this line to be represented.^ The place where the diskos.
