The royal pair had refused from the beginning to be put in lead-ing-strings by the Archbishop of Toledo, and the haughty prelate, disgusted with treat-ment to which he had not been accustumed, withdrew from their court and espousedthe cause of the unfortunate Joanna, boasting that he had raised Isabella from thedistaff and he would send her back to it again.
