Early 20th century ophthalmology device. Ophthalmology is the study of the eye and its disorders and their treatment. This is an ophthalmotrope dating from 1900. Designed by the Paris-based Swiss ophthalmologist Edmund Landolt (1846-1926), this device is intended to demonstrate how the eye moves in its socket. The internal workings can be rotated, but only as far as an eye would rotate. This device was manufactured by the French Giroux company of Paris.
