Pancreatic cancer, Whipple surgery. Image 5 of 13. Close-up of Whipple surgery being carried out on a patient with pancreatic cancer. Whipple surgery involves the removal of the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), part of the stomach, and the head of the pancreas. The jejunum (the next part of the small intestine) is then attached to the remains of the pancreas and stomach to bypass the removed tissue and organs. It is the gastroenterostomy part of this latter stage that is shown here, with the stomach (pink flap being pulled forward) being prepared for attachment to the jejunum.
