DIEP flap abdominal scar. Profile view of a woman who has undergone DIEP flap reconstruction of her left breast (not seen) after mastectomy. In this type of reconstruction, blood vessels called deep inferior epigastric perforators (DIEP), as well as the skin and fat connected to them, are transferred to the chest from the lower abdomen. This allows reconstruction of the breast after mastectomy without the sacrifice of any of the abdominal muscles. The abdominal scar has developed a dog ear , a pucker of excess tissue at the end of the scar.
